How to Clear Clogged Pores on Your Face

Clogged pores are caused by dirt and pollution or by excess oil and dead skin cells. These can cause pimple breakouts that may damage your skin and leave scars and pigmentation.

If you want to know how to clear clogged pores on your face, here are five tried and tested home remedies you can choose from:

  1. Baking Soda

Baking soda is well loved by housewives and homemakers because of its cleaning properties. But did you know that it can also unplug pores? Baking soda has been proven effective in removing dirt and dead skin cells to give your face a healthier, more natural glow.

It is very easy to prepare a baking soda scrub for your face. Simply mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 1 teaspoon of water or your favorite facial cleanser. Gently scrub your face with the mixture for 1-2 minutes and rinse thoroughly. You can use this scrub once per week.

Another option is to mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder and 5 tablespoons of honey. Squeeze half a lemon and mix thoroughly. Use it as a facial mask and leave on your face for 5 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry.

  1. Eggs Whites

Egg whites are a common ingredient for facial masks and scrubs because of their toning properties.

To use an egg white as a facial mask, just whip it for a few minutes until it becomes foamy. Refrigerate for about 5 minutes and squeeze half a lemon in it. Mix thoroughly and apply on your face. Allow the mixture to dry for 10 minutes and then wash off with lukewarm water.

If you want to make a cleansing facial scrub, blend one egg white with 1 tablespoon of ground almonds and 1 tablespoon of honey. Rub the scrub on your face gently and let it dry on your face for a few minutes. You don’t have to rinse the mixture with water; instead, you can just wipe it off with a wet towel or washcloth.

  1. Honey

Honey contains many important vitamins and minerals that can make your skin healthier. It is also rich in potassium so bacteria cannot live in it. (This is also the reason why honey never expires!) By reducing the presence of dirt and bacteria, your pores become less clogged and you eventually get clearer skin.

There is no complicated trick to using honey to clear clogged pores. You simply apply it on your face and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water. Repeat this twice or thrice per week to keep pores clog-free.

If you want a honey mask, you can mix 3 tablespoons of honey and 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon. You can then apply it on your face and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water.

Another version of this face mask requires two other ingredients. Mix 1 teaspoon of honey with 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt and 1 teaspoon olive oil. Mix well together and rub on your face. Let it sit there for 15 minutes before washing off.

  1. Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a favorite home remedy for acne and oily skin, and for good reasons. It is known to exfoliate and remove excess oils from the skin, leaving your face feeling fresher and your pores cleaner.

You can mix oatmeal with different ingredients to create different facial treatments. One popular version is the oatmeal and baking soda combination. Combine 2 teaspoons of fine oatmeal and 1 teaspoon of baking soda. Add a little water to make a paste. Rub the mixture on your face for 1-2 minutes and rinse.

Another recipe uses yogurt as a key ingredient. Simply mix 3 tablespoons of dry oatmeal with ¼ cup yogurt and massage the paste onto your face for 1 minute. Rinse with cool water afterward.

To make an oatmeal mask, cook ½ cup oatmeal and let it cool to room temperature. Then mix in 1 teaspoon of olive oil and rub on your skin. Let the mask sit for 15 minutes. You can then wipe the mixture off with a washcloth and rinse with cool water.

  1. Sugar

Not surprisingly, sugar is also an effective agent against clogged pores. You can use it as an exfoliant to remove deep-seated dirt in your pores and remove scars caused by acne.

To use sugar as a facial scrub, crush 2 tablespoons of white sugar. Squeeze half a lemon into the sugar powder and add a few drops of water so you can create a thick paste. Gently rub the paste onto your face for 5 minutes and then wash off with cold water. Don’t forget to use a moisturizer after. You only have to do this once per week to keep your pores clean.

Steaming Your Face

Before you apply a facial mask or scrub, it’s better if you steam your skin first. This way, the dirt stuck in your pores will become loose and it will be easier to wash them off.

To steam your face, boil some water and transfer it into a large bowl. You can add your favorite additives, like sliced lemons, essential oils, or green tea bags into the bowl for a more refreshing or relaxing steam bath.

Place a bath towel over your head and lower your face over the bowl. Keep your face at least 6-8 inches away from the bowl so you won’t get scalded. Let your skin absorb the steam for 10-15 minutes. Pat your face dry.
